What makes a LinkedIn message get a reply?
Buyers decide in a few seconds whether a message is worth answering. The ones that get replies have a few things in common. They open with a real reason: something that changed for the reader, like a new role, a hire or a launch. They connect that reason to one problem the reader probably has, not to your product. They end with one easy question that can be answered in a few words. And they're short enough to read on a phone without scrolling.
What they leave out matters just as much. No pitch in the connection note, no calendar link before the buyer has replied, and none of the stock phrases every template uses. If there's no reply, a follow-up should add something new, not just bump the thread. We cover that in the LinkedIn follow-up message after connecting, and how to find the reason in the first place in signal-based outbound.
How the score works
Each message is scored out of 100 on seven checks. A check that passes earns its full points, a warning earns half, and a fail earns nothing.
- A reason to reach out (20 points). The message mentions something that changed for the reader, such as a new role, a hire, a launch or a post. Generic lines like "I saw your profile" don't count.
- No pitch too early (15 points). Connection notes shouldn't pitch at all. A first message can include one line on what you help with, but no demo, pricing or free trial offer.
- No meeting ask or calendar link (15 points). No booking links and no "15 minutes next week" before the buyer has replied.
- One clear question (10 points). One easy question to answer. Notes and close-the-loop follow-ups can skip it.
- Short enough for a phone (15 points). Up to 200 characters for a note, about 70 words for a first message and about 50 for a follow-up.
- No template phrases (15 points). Lines like "I hope this finds you well" or "companies like yours" that buyers spot in a second.
- About them, not you (10 points). More "you" and "your" than "I", "we" and "our".
Two things cap the score. A note or first message with no reason can't score above 55, and a message with an unfilled merge field such as {first_name} can't score above 30. Follow-ups are judged on whether they add something new, and lose 20 points for "just following up" or "bumping this".

FAQ
Is the LinkedIn message checker free?
Yes. No sign-up, no limits.
Is my message stored?
No. The check runs in your browser and nothing is sent to us.
How long should a LinkedIn connection note be?
Under 200 characters if you use a free account. Premium allows up to 300. Free accounts can also only add a note to a few invitations each month, so use them on the people who matter most.
Does a high score guarantee a reply?
No. The checker reviews how the message is written. Who you send it to, and when, matters at least as much.
Can it check messages in other languages?
This version checks English messages only.
